Now in its 32nd year, the parade moves along Broad Street in Schuylerville, where past and present meet in a shared act of remembrance. For many, it is one of the most visible expressions of how this community continues to carry forward the legacy of the Battles of Saratoga.

Parade Information

This annual commemoration of America’s Turning Point victory at Saratoga enters its 32nd year thanks to our friends with The Turning Point Parade. The parade takes place on Broad Street in Schuylerville, look for Saratoga250 in the parade.

Why Is This Important?

The Turning Point Parade & Festival commemorates the American Victory at the Battles of Saratoga on October 17, 1777, during the American Revolutionary War. In the months prior to October 8, 1777, the British suffered about 2,000 casualties. Burgoyne’s forces, now down to about 6,000 men, took refuge in a fortified camp on the heights of Saratoga (today’s Schuylerville).

There an American force that was approaching 20,000 men surrounded the exhausted British army. Faced with such overwhelming numbers, Burgoyne surrendered on October 17, 1777. By the terms of the Convention of Saratoga, Burgoyne’s depleted army marched out of camp “with the Honors of War” and stacked their weapons along the west bank of the Hudson River at Fort Hardy. Saratoga was a decisive and important victory. It was the turning point of the American Revolution.

On the 249th anniversary of the Surrender at Saratoga, explore the sites where history was made! Saratoga250, in partnership with Saratoga National Historical Park, will have five sites open where you can learn about the event known as the Turning Point of the American Revolution! A free trolley provided by our partners at CDTA will allow you to move easily between sites with an onboard guide to answer questions. Saratoga NHP Park Rangers will be at several sites to engage with the public on this anniversary date.

Join us for an evening of history and harmony as we mark the 249th anniversary of the British surrender at Saratoga. This commemorative concert features 18th-century music performed by the renowned Musicians of Ma’alwyck, joined by award winning soprano Vedrana Kalas, and is punctuated by the insightful historical insights of featured speaker Eric Schnitzer, Saratoga NHP Ranger and Military Historian, who will share firsthand accounts of the surrender from diverse perspectives.

The event will include the announcement and presentation of the Saratoga 250 annual high school senior scholarship winners. Doors open at 6:30 PM with the program running from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at the Arts Center on the Hudson in Mechanicville, NY.

Tickets and silent auction raffle prizes will support the continued programming efforts of the nonprofit Campaign for Saratoga 250, Inc.

Preserving the Harvest
What foods would you eat during the spring, summer, fall, and winter in the 1770s? Learn how food was preserved and prepared on local farms. Examine samples of seasonal foods as well as the items used to prepare and serve meals.
Sewing & Mending Clothes

Blacksmith & The Traveling Forge
Visit the Traveling Forge, a military piece of equipment that acted as a traveling repair shop to fix tools, wagons, cannons, or whatever an army on the move needed. Two of these traveling forges were surrendered by the British at Saratoga, along with their cannons and other artillery equipment.

Step into a British military encampment and discover what life was like for British soldiers during the Revolutionary era. Explore their daily routines, equipment, and experiences on campaign.

The run aims to raise funds and awareness for local veterans while connecting the community to the region’s rich Revolutionary War history. Participants will engage in both athletic challenge and patriotic tribute on historically significant ground.

On behalf of the Town of Saratoga, the Village of Schuylerville, the Saratoga County 250th American Revolution Commission, and the Campaign for Saratoga 250, we are honored to host students and families of young children to participate in the annual Surrender Day Ceremony, marking the 249th anniversary of the American victory at the Battles of Saratoga.

The annual commemoration recalls October 17, 1777, when British General John Burgoyne surrendered to American General Horatio Gates and is held on the very ground where British regulars laid down their weapons making it “the Field of Grounded Arms.”

Join in this living history experience and program with children’s music, and ceremonial toasting to the victory to highlight understanding of the Victory at Saratoga’s lasting significance.

Highlights of the Event Program include:

Students portraying British soldiers in the Grounding of the Arms (with wooden muskets)
Presentation of the National Colors (tentatively the New York National Guard)
Lowering of the British flag and raising of the American flag
Cannon firings to mark the turning points of the program
Patriotic songs performed by students
Sword surrender reenactment recalling Burgoyne’s capitulation
Keynote address on General Henry Knox and leadership in crisis
Presentation of the General John Patterson – Supervisor Thomas Wood IV Saratoga Teaching Excellence Award
Laying of wreaths in honor of those who fought and sacrificed
The traditional 13 Toasts to the American Victory, accompanied by cannon fire

What is Surrender Day?
Surrender Day marks October 17, 1777, when British General John Burgoyne surrendered his army to American General Horatio Gates at Saratoga, ending the Battles of Saratoga and serving as a turning point in the American Revolution.
Why is it called the Battles of Saratoga?
The campaign included several engagements:
- Sept. 19: Battle of Freeman’s Farm
- Oct. 7: Battle of Bemis Heights
- Oct. 10–16: Siege of Saratoga
- Oct. 17: Surrender of Burgoyne
Together, these engagements are known collectively as the Battles of Saratoga.
Why is the event focused on students?
Surrender Day emphasizes engaging young people in their community’s history. Each year, Schuylerville 4th graders prepare essays on the meaning of America’s Turning Point. We are proud to invite other schools to help us. The Schuylerville Elementary School’s music program, led for over 20 years by Chris Tucker, provides music and sound for the ceremony.
