Historians have traditionally shown surprisingly little interest in the artworks related to their periods of study. This is not to say that artworks are ignored – history books are often replete with period pictures meant to showcase the themes discussed in print. Unfortunately, these artworks are often poorly chosen or are little more than an afterthought.

This program explores the different forms of 2-dimentional 18th century artwork media, spurs awareness of pitfalls, and investigates shocking deceptions related to Revolutionary War drawings and paintings. Presenter Eric Schnitzer is a park ranger at Saratoga National Historical Park.

WHY WE CELEBRATE VICTORY AT SARATOGA:

Saratoga. Marked the first-ever surrender in history of an army of the mighty British Empire.

Saratoga. General Washington gave thanks to Providence upon hearing of the victory at the second battle here. A needed, decisive victory to turn the tide, just as the capital of Philadelphia was falling to British hands and New York City was under continued occupation.

Saratoga. Congress proclaimed the first ever national Thanksgiving, celebrated in December 1777, in part due to its turning point victory here.

Saratoga. Benjamin Franklin leveraged it to cinch his years long diplomacy reaching a treaty of military alliance with France to recognize our young nation & enter the war. Later he minted a coin with Saratoga’s 1777 victory on one side, Yorktown’s 1781 victory nearly four years to the day on the other.

Saratoga. The 1821 renowned surrender scene painted by John Trumbull is one of only four portraits hung in prominence in the United States Capitol rotunda. Evidence of its centuries long significance as the turning point in America’s revolutionary fight for freedom.

Saratoga has been a beacon throughout history of hope, triumph, and a forceful turning point for freedom altering the course of world events. Generations have written of it, been inspired to create art, build monuments, preserve the hallowed ground of its patriots, commission warships, and more. Now, we will bring its inspired history forward to new generations of Americans and freedom seekers.

  • Daughters of the American Revolution

  • American_Battlefield_Trust_Logo

The American Revolution Experience invites visitors to consider the choice faced by members of the revolutionary generation as tensions mounted in the 1770s: Would these ordinary citizens risk their lives and livelihoods in pursuit of liberty? Or would they remain loyal subjects of the British crown, coming into conflict with neighbors and family? The exhibit surfaces diverse viewpoints and experiences, touching on the journeys — both literal and figurative — of Patriots and Loyalists, men and women, Black and Native populations and even international allies. Rather than focusing only on generals and famous statesmen, it introduces audiences to drummer boys, military mapmakers and other ordinary people who were impacted by global events.

Created through a collaboration between the American Battlefield Trust and the National D.A.R., the exhibit is also made possible by generous matching funds from the National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program battlefield interpretation grants.

Mary McAlpin and her husband Major Daniel McAlpin purchased a 600-acre estate on the west side of Saratoga Lake in 1773. Two years later, local militia asked McAlpin to train their soldiers. He refused to become involved, was jailed multiple times in Albany, and eventually escaped and joined Burgoyne’s army at Fort Edward.

While her husband was in jail, Mary McAlpin stayed at home with her three children. The McAlpin home was placed under guard by local Patriots, who felt free to use the home as their own. In May of 1777, the Albany Committee of Safety ordered the McAlpin family from their home. They were brought first to Stillwater and then to Albany. Penniless and without proper clothing, the family relied on friends to provide food and shelter.

After the War for Independence, Mary McAlpin applied for reparations from the British government for their losses. Her husband had died in Canada during the war and she was now a widow with children to support. Her claim included 900 acres on Saratoga Lake. The property was one among 13 belonging to Loyalist families in what is now Saratoga County that had been seized by the State of New York after the war.

“In memory of the most brilliant soldier of the Continental Army who was desperately wounded on this spot, the sally port of Burgoyne’s great [western] redoubt 7th October 1777 winning for his countrymen the decisive battle of the American Revolution and for himself the rank of Major General.”

Baroness Frederika Charlotte Louise Riedesel, or simply Baroness von Riedesel, was the wife of a Hessian commander who fought on the side of the British. During the war, she accompanied her husband to North America, making her one of the few European women to witness up close the American Revolution and, in particular, the Battles of Saratoga.

As her husband commanded troops in the campaign, the Baroness found herself caught in the midst of the fighting. She became known for her remarkable resilience and resourcefulness, acting as a nurse and caring for wounded soldiers from both sides.

Painted portrait of a baroness woman

The Baroness documented her experiences in a detailed journal, providing valuable insights into the social and military aspects of the time. Her journal, known as the “Memoir of a Hessian Officer’s Wife,” offers a unique perspective on the war and provides a glimpse into the daily life, struggles and triumphs of a woman living in a war-torn land.

Baroness Riedesel’s story provides a unique and compelling perspective on the Revolutionary War, its direct impact on women and children encamped with armed forces, and their experiences as prisoners of war.
